The Love of London
Thanks to Facebook memories reminding us what happened one year ago today, I received lovely reminders that we went to London for New Years to start 2016 in a new place. We bought an Expedia package that included flights and hotel to go for the weekend from January 1-3, 2016. Below is a trip recap of the weekend getaway we had in London.
LONDON
WHAT TO DO
- Sainsbury's - We absolutely LOVE going to local grocery stores when we travel and we stumbled upon this one called Sainsbury. It is the second largest chain of supermarket in the UK
- Tourist Buildings - It was raining the days we wanted to see sights, so we did a drive through to see Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Big Ben, etc via car
- The View from the Shard - Even though it was a bit cloudy, it was a great view of London at the city's highest viewing platform.
- London Film Museum - There was a special exhibit for Bond in Motion promoting James Bond and the cars from Bond movies. Will loved it to see these different vehicles in person.
- Covent Garden Market - We stumbled upon this after the London Film Museum and it's a fruit, vegetable, flower wholesale market with shopping
- British Museum - I highly recommend this spot to visit if you are in London. The admission is free with optional donation for admission and it is a public institute focused around history, art, and culture.
- Harrod's - This is a luxury department store and worth just walking in to browse at everything they have in here. It is also a nice sight at night lit up on the exterior of the building.
WHAT TO EAT
- Borough Market - this is a great food hall spot to grab lunch with a variety of options located next to London Bridge
- Savoy Grill - We ate a delightful London lunch at Savoy Grill, a Gordon Ramsay restaurant to celebrate our 26th monthsary and they decorated a cute dessert dish for us. The food was heavenly and it was the best aged steak Will has ever ate.
- The Wolesey - This is a café-restaurant in European tradition located in Piccadilly, London with beautiful decor and good food.
- Galvin at Windows - This is a Michelin-starred restaurant on the 28th floor with 360° views of the city
WHAT TO STAY
- Clayton Hotel Chiswick - This 4-star hotel was included in the Expedia package and was decent enough for us since we had a car and only used the hotel for sleeping.
TRANSPORTATION
- Nissan Leaf - Will wanted to say he drove in London and he picked the Nissan Leaf electric car through Hertz Rental Car (below). He did a fairly decent job driving on the opposite side even with narrow roads and many roundabouts.
- Oyster - We decided to try their subway trains in London and it was quite reliable and similar to the way they run in NYC
I will end this post with the below London opera singer we bumped into strolling around Covent Garden.
